NWSC Alpine Skiing Foundation Instructor Training Course (Nov 26th & 27th 2022)

Published on 29 October 2022 at 20:35

Previously Level 1/Club Instructor

Date – 26th and 27th November 2022

Venue – Llandudno Snowsports Centre

Times – 10am to 4.30(ish) each day, (lunch/refreshments not included)

This course is open to anyone from the age of 15 upwards, (you will be able to take the assessment to fully qualify from the age of 16). The course is designed to train those who wish to teach on an artificial snowsports slope. This will enable you to teach from complete beginnings, through snowploughing, to the edge of parallel turning. This will provide skiers with the foundations on which to build their more advanced parallel skiing and as such is an extremely important level of their learning. There will be a strong emphasis on teaching people, not just skiing technique – learner centric in the jargon.

After the training, you will need to complete a period of supervised instruction and obtain a first aid certificate, DBS check and complete a Safeguarding and Protecting Children. We can help you with the second 2 of these and, once things settle down from the covid restrictions, we will probably be able to direct you to inexpensive first aid courses

Entry to the course requires you to be a competent parallel turner. The course will then take you through the techniques and skills of the syllabus. The course is largely practical and most of our time will be spent on the slope. Some underpinning theory will also be included, and this will be done indoors. You will therefore need appropriate skiing clothing and something for the indoor sessions unless you want to sit in your ski jacket etc.

The course tutor is Ian Fawcett who is a Level 4 Coach and Tutor for Snowsport Cymru/Wales. The course is validated by Snowsport Cymru/Wales and is also valid in England. For more information, please see the SSC/W web site and also the Coaching and Instructing Pathways graphic on the North Wales Snowsports Club.
